I just finished NGE. You pretty much inspired me to watch (I know, I'm late), but it's one of the best philisophical...things I've ever seen. I have yet to watch the movies. You have good reason to call yourself Shinji, Brian. Some of him reminds me of you.

I used to think that was a bad thing.... now i'm hoping that you mean more the part that wants to change, and to grow, and to be a better person
I feel like a lot of people un-necessarily dismiss shinj - in reality he's not really that whiny, and he really does try to improve himself over the course of the series..... he just does it wrong, and unfortunately realises the stuff he needs to know at an unfortunate time - namely, when it's too late to actually help anyone >_>;;

I entirely agree. Most of the characters in this anime, and people in real life, hide themselves away, hide their true personalities, some of their best qualities, even, in fear that others will reject them, think badly of them, disapprove. But I think that the approval of others towards your behavior is something that one would desire, but is superfluous. As long as you're happy with who you are, people will come to like you, too. Shinji realizes this at the end. The whole series, he wonders why he pilots the Eva and thinks that he's doing it for others. He thought this was right. If you only focus on making others happy, your life, frankly, will suck. It is important, however, to remember what effect your actions will have on the people surrounding you.
P.S. What the fuck is with this "vaginal intercourse" at the beginning of the AMV? NEEDS MOAR BUTTSECKS D:
