So, yesterday (Sunday the 28th) I bought some gum from target. Exciting, ino.
I didn't bother to put the gum high on my desk or on my dresser, rather, I didn't think about it.
So when I left for French this morning (Monday the 29th) and put my dog in my room, it didn't occur to me that my dog would find the not-so-well-hidden bag, tear up the gum packaging, and completely devour two full packs of gum. Two. Full. Packs. Of. Gum.
That's 36 pieces.
I did some search on the internet and it looked to me as if gum wasn't that big of a deal, because dogs have strong digestive systems. Just to be sure, I clicked the back button and decided to look at few more links.
Something caught my eye. "Xylitol"
My gum had xylitol in it. So I looked it up some more. Dogs can die after eating just a couple pieces of xylitol gum if they don't weigh much. Sure, my dog weighed almost 40 pounds, but she ate 36 pieces of gum compared to 5 or so.
It took forever to convince my mom that it was something to worry about. I had to clean my room, so she knew that the gum wasn't tossed about my floor (my room was a mess)
I had to tell her exactly how dangerous xylitol was, then she had to look it up herself.
I had to promise her that the money for the vet bill would come out of my savings (bye bye savings?)
And I had to show her the torn up gum packages
So I had wasted an hour probably on all of that, and an hour had already gone by since I had left for French by the time I noticed the messy package (she would've eaten the gum within 10-15 minutes of me leaving)
Of course, that had me worried. Although, she didn't seem to be showing any symptons, except a slight decrease in activity, so that was good.
A little before 11 AM my mom called me and told me that the vet had given her vomit stuff and she had thrown up a lot of gum, but they were going to keep her overnight to monitor her blood sugar and stuff.
I'm seriously worried, though, because my dog is my life. She's definitely the reason that I have a future and I know exactly what I want to do with my life. But I could lose everything if she doesn't make it.

Oh man. Thank goodness you cared enough for your dog to check up on it right away. I hope she'll be fine.

Don't worry, my dog ate a pound of fine chocolate a couple years ago and here she is now, blind and fat. But that's because of age and allergies, not chocolate. maybe the chocolate contributed to the fat, but not much.

Tell your dog I said for it to get better. No one like a dying/dead dog. I doubt it'll die though.

Her blood sugar levels are great (which means that the xylitol never reached her blood stream <3)
My dog ripped apart a pack of 5 Gum but I don't think he liked the mint 'cuz he never ate any >_<

well thats good to hear^^
don't worry I heard chocolate makes dogs blind and kills them too but our dog, which is dead now but not because of the chocolate, ate nutella toats every Sunday and it didn't seem to have any effect (we obviosly stopped after we heard that it's not good for his health)

She kind of has bristley fur on her back/tail and soft fur on legs/belly/head, and the coloring of a beagle. She's got the build of a brittany spaniel (her head included). So my guess would be brittany/german shepherd/beagle mix? o.o or something like that...
Oh my God, I am so glad that everything has seemed to turn out okay. I love my dog more than almost anything in the world. I'd give my life for her. I know what you must have been going through because my dog also gives my future hope. She is one of the main reasons I keep on living... just so I can get to go home and see her during my holiday breaks that I get from school.
