[big wall of text]
Well, for most people it's not a hard concept at all. They believe and so they do.
But for those among us that do not believe it's a hard concept indeed, especiall when you're agnostic like me.
What's so hard about it? For starters, there are plenty of religions around the world. We have for example Scientology, the religion of ancient Egypt (yes, it still exists!), Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism.... and a lot more. And within those religions there are sub-religions. I don't know much about those sub religions in Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, etc... only about Christianity. That's because I used to be Christian myself and because my parents have a membership of a Christian newspaper. Therefore I will mainly focus on Christianity; no offense to people of other religions.
Problem 1 I am facing: Which of the "whole" religions in the "right one"? Is the only real diety Allah? God? Jaweh? Ra? Zeus? Woden?
Problem 2: If one if those gods really is the "real one", then which subgroup does s/he favour? In the case of Christianity: would that be Catholicism? Protestantism? Reformacy? Baptism? Methodists? Seventh day Adventists? Pentacosts? Navigators? Ecclesiasts? Mormons? Phelpism? Evangelist? Lifestream? Christian Science?
I have no clue.
It must be a great feeling to know for sure.
Then why don't I just pick one (the one I like most) and decide that's the one?
It's because that would be deceit. Not to the diety; dieties are generally omniscient; I would not fool him/her. I'd be fooling myself. The teeth of doubt would always gnarl on my soul.
I don't know if there's a diety at all. That separates me from the Atheists and the Deists. (Deists are kind of funnily called " somethingists" in Dutch) I noticed how many people can't see the differences between Agnostic people and Atheists, so I'll Wiki them for those who don't know:
Okay, this agnosticism is a little more complicated than I at first thought, but there it is: link. I'd be a combination of hard agnoticism and mild agnosticism.
Atheism; also a hard concept.
Since both concepts are so complicated, I think it would be wise to explain in what way you are agnostic or atheist.... casue there are multiple forms.
I'll explain for a while now how I am agnostic.
I used to be Christian. When I was 5 or so I was sure the only god was God and that all the other religion were bad and they'd go to hell. Not something I'm proud of. (about the wishing people to hell, that is)
I never really liked going to church (the people in church sang so slowly and the sermons were long and tedious), but that's not why I became agnostic. I mean, there are plenty of "home Christians" who believe at home, prey several times and day and read the Bible and such.
My parents made sure to put me on Christian schools and such and church for the kids, later church for the youth, then church for those who want to talk in private with the vicars and then church for students.
I'm a person who's always wondering and curious about everything, but necessarily looking for answers. I don't dive straight into a subject, make it a project and find out the truth within two days. I'm like: "Hm, how would this work?" and see whether I'll actually find out or not. And I always look at things from multiple sides.
When I was about 16 years old I was no longer sure if there was a god, because of the reasons I listed above. And from that year on I was agnostic.
When one is agnostic it generally means one thinks the existance of a diety can not be proven or disproven. That does no tell whether a person believes there IS a god after all or not. (Agnostic Theism) This goes for most agnosts: I don't know whether there's a god or not. And many agnosts are therefore not religious.
Being an agnost is hard. Not because of not knowing (well, for me it's not that bad), but because of people around you.
I noticed, not only on Basil, but also in real life, that both religious people and athiests sometimes seem to look down upon agnostic people. I hate stereotyping, so the things I'm going to say do not go for ALL religious and atheist people.
There are a couple of things I have been called on basil and Sleepywood:
- Soulless
- Dumb and indecisive
- an attentionseeking, not worth the air I breath, not worth God' s attention scientific motherfucker (I'm not even a scientist)
- an idiot with a head of my ass (my own)
- an atheist (I'm not >_>
- antichrist (pardon?)
- the murderer of my own grandfather (for being non christian)
- responsible for all the pain and sorrow in this world
- a demon
- diablo
- the devil
- inhuman
- " atually u r chrsitain but ur sain ur agnostic cuz ur an attention seeker jas like a friend of mine"
- weak and too dumb to even live (I have been living for the past 22 years just fine)
- EMO cause I probably already know I'll never get to heaven (hell, I don't even know if there's a heaven or not and besides, I know whether I'm EMO or not myself)
Those things aren't fun to hear. (like when a guy on Basil said I was ugly as hell when he saw my picture).
Anyway, what I hate about those particular people is their close-mindedness. They know The Truth and everything that's not The Truth is not only wrong, but is also against The Truth. A case of "If you're not for me, you're against me". En passant the Christians among those people seem to forget that part in the Bible that says judging people is wrong and that you should look at your own faults first.
I alwso don't really like it how people have already decided agnosts and atheist (I created a new noun beacsue I'm tired of spelling out "agnostic people" all the time) have no morals, cause all morals stem from God and that if the world would be taken over by an atheist or an agnost it would become living hell.
Of that I'm not so sure.
I know an atheist boy who, when I was having lunch at his place, kept asking if I'd had enough tea, if I wanted another slice of bread, let's go to the theatre this afternoon..... No, he was not in love with me.
And I as an agnost like to help people out; cared for my grandmother while my grandfather was in hospital; I collected money for an organisation that does cancer research, I helped children in my school with English....
This was all in vain, if I really have to believe a person on Sleepywood. And I should stop trying to get into Heaven, cause God would outsmart me anyway. I'm not trying get into heaven at all. As I already stated, I don't even know if there IS heaven.
She also said I would not be remembered within two decades after my death because of my agnosticism. I didn't quite see the link.
I should get away from Christians, cause my sin would affect them and cause them bad luck in the future. o_O"
Luckily by far not all Christian, or religious people overall, think that way. The vicars of the church I so now and then go to, know I'm agnostic, but don't mind at all. They don't look down upon me, don't push me from them, don't say things like "Well, girl, one day you'll see the light". Nope. They just treat me like another human being. One of them, by the way, doesn't like the consensus of God being male, so he sometimes refers to God with her and she.
I kinda forgot what I wanted to talk about. It may seem like I'm bashing Christians, but I'm not- it's purely numbers here. I've been called this by Chrstians simply because there are more of them in my direct environment than for example Muslims and/or Jews.
I sincerely apologized in case I offended someone.
Touzokuou
PS: I hate "my truth is the only truth and no other truth is true" people overall; not just Christians. My (agnostic) brother has that habit as well, and sometimes I hate him for it. XD

I consider myself an Agnostic Theist... I would go on about religion, but I will have so many people flaming me for it. w/e.
Just keep your head up. A person that looks down on you for your beliefs is not anyone worth your time.
Bands: Metallica, Pink Floyd, Sublime, Alter Bridge, The Beatles, Dead Silent Orchestra
Were alot alike! Well I will continue to stay Agnostic unless there is proof that i see with my own eyes.
Bands: Hey! If you are reading this....you have TRAINS on your chest!
Whoops, made a LOT of typos.... I'll fix them when I get the chance.
What also happens is that when I meet a strongly religious person in real life, they often kind of recoil from me and start asking me questions about why I think I am here, who created me and what my purpose is in life.
Why am I here?
Pure luck. Could have been another bit of sperm and another egg cell.
Who created me?
Well.... my parents created ME, but I don't know who created life. And I'm actually fine by not knwoing. I'm no scientist.... I'll leave it to others to find out.
What's my purpose in life?
I make my own purpose. Right now my purpose is to learn, later my purpose will be to teach.
And at this exact moment my purpose is to be having an exam within an hour and being pissed cause U-twist lagged out..... I can't see where I'll be having the exam. XD
Bands: No bands, but Rolf Koster, Uwe Kroger, Addo Kruizinga (as Rudolf and Death)
I'm the biggest athiest in the world and I go to a catholic school.
It's actually quite interesting o.o
Bands: 3 Days Grace, My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds to Mars ;o and lots of others :P
^ Lol, same with me MrNub. I just sorta mumble the hymns .
Correction: Buddhism isn't a religion, it's a teaching/way of life. Kind of like confucianism.
It's deity! Not diety! D:

Oh, how many times I have thought over questions like those, literally thousands of times, wasting hours in deep thought. It's a bit hard for me to fully actually explain my thought processes but I've really come to the conclusion on my own belief that there is no deity. I personally think that people who believe in religion are weak minded, that they need to have a higher being to guide their life. And, if anything would happen, they would just pass it off as "it was the will of ...". But anyway, that's just my opinion and I don't voice it out as I would know how others would feel if I just blatantly tramp all over their faith. I guess all it comes to is blaming the book "Sophie's World" on doing this to me, even though I didn't even finish reading it. Too much philosophy isn't good at the of I think it was 9 or so.
And...bleh. That was a really crappily written response. So scrambly, jumping from one topic to another D: It's late I guess.
Bands: The Killers, Three Days Grace, All-American Rejects, My Favourite Highway
about the skin..thats true...and about the religion? i'm Christian-nondenominational
Bands: Singers only get that right!
I'm atheist and I'm a "my truth is the only truth and no other truth is true" guy, but I don't go that far.
There is only one guy I argue with about religion, and from my side it's not like I feel there is no god, I am actually sure of it.
When my friend speaks he says he just has his beliefs, but he's not really sure of it.
I never look down on people or stereotype just because of what they think, but I do think to myself "how can they now see God does not exist"?
Whether you think God is real or not, it's your choice and I can't say you're dumb or stuff like that just because I think differently.
Being an atheist seems kinda mean actually, I think people should be more agnostic without believing anything at all, without rejecting other people's beliefs.
MrNubtastic, I don't think you can take the atheism title away from me... if you knew me you would know how hard is it.
Problem 1 is an excellent question, one that all people ought to ask and find out.
Problem 2 can only really be asked once problem 1 has been answered.
Problem 1: How to tell which is right, if any? Face it, there are thousands of beliefs out there, many different claimed deities, etc...
Well, I believe there is a way to find out with a reasonable amount of certainty and evidence. First one has to assume that if ANY are to be correct, that probably only one can be correct unless two were to be found that were in perfect agreement with each other and just happened to be the "right" one. But yeah, point being that for the most part, only one would probably be right if any were to be at all.
Second of all, simple observation can already categorize them into two distinct groups. Not to be overgeneralising or anything as that is not my intention, but on the one side there are all the belief systems that are primarily based upon what "I, the individual" can do to "please" my god and be accepted by him. On the other side is Christianity, based solely upon the belief that one can't do anything to begin with and that all has been done for the individual by their God; all they need to do is simply accept it. (I am not aware of any other such belief systems that fit in this second category).
One will find that the vast majority of beliefs that fit the first category where the individual is responsible for their acceptance by their god are usually somewhat seemingly man-made, superstitious, but then again, how could anyone claim that Christianity isn't either?
Well, I believe one could. Christianity is the most wide-spread "Religion" out there. I'm a Christian, no secret about it. It saddens me how the seeming majority of Christians do not act like Christians, nor treat others like they preach they should, and so much more. So much so that people in this day and age tend to have an entirely different concept of them than should be according to their "claimed" beliefs. One can only categorize such individuals as "false" Christians, however, I'm not one to judge, but I would imagine they should at least not contradict themselves.
As you may have seen from my posts in the past, a huge foundational point of what I believe Christianity has over all other beliefs out there, is prophecy. Some 30% of the Biblical record is prophecy. Every single prophecy claimed to have been fulfilled by now, has been fulfilled with 100% accuracy. If there is 100% accuracy in fulfilment, one can only conclude one of two options:
1. There is something supernatural involved.
2. The book was modified after the occurrences.
The Dead sea scrolls which date back to 600-500B.C. prove that all the prophecies predicted before that time have not been modified, (they can be seen in museums today), in fact, the entire old testament was shown by them to be much the same, with little variation over time at all.
Anyway, what's my point? Predictions from the rise and fall of nations as recorded by history were understood to be coming, and all came with 100% fulfilment as predicted. The same can be said of predictions regarding actions of specific men which also came to pass. Every prediction in the Bible that has been historically found, has been proven to have come true. The accuracy, detail, and evidence shows it to be far beyond the possibilities of cheap coincidence. It's something I was blown away with when I first came across it; and yet most of Christianity today is in ignorance of a lot of it, and not only that, but ignorance of their entire belief system as is too often reflected by their actions towards others. I don't claim to be prefect either though, but each person has the ability to try.
I particularly liked your statement about not wanting to fool or deceive yourself. Better to know "why" and be content, than to believe a lie.
Edit: I forgot to make any comment on Problem 2. I believe, (From a Christian point of view obviously and with reasonable scriptural basis) that God favours all those who sincerely seek to follow Him, regardless of denomination within Christianity.
Bands: Depends
Very good questions. I don't know if I consider myself agnostic or gnostic. I definitely feel spirituality and the concept of a higher being is just too obscure. Ergo, why I think we are our own gods
Religion has always been a hard question. I don't have much to say about it, but I read a very clever and funny thing somewhere: it's better to believe in a god because if you don't and there's one, you go in Hell, if there isn't one, nothing happens. If you do believe in one, nothing happens or you go to Heaven.
I do know the choice may still be hard, but remember that Jews, Christians and Muslims all believe in the same god.
Also...it's not because you believe in one god that you have to pray everyday and all that. To me, Religion is more a bunch of moral laws; things that we should do to make the world a better place for everyone.
Oh and, if you want to keep your sanity, don't go in a Religious thread on Basil. I may be a little mean here, but most of them are morons trying to force everyone to believe what they believe. And because if you know you're Agnostic, there's no need to tell everyone, that's personal.
(Did that post make sense?)

I know what you mean man. I am religious myself, at least, I say I am. I just don't know what to think anymore, every time I pray, it's never answered, and any signs I look for, I don't see. I mean, every time something good happens people are like "It's a miracle of God." and I think "How do you not know if it's not just good luck?" People tell me the Bible gives signs, and how is that? I mean, Revelation says that there will be many more bad things near the end of time. (a.k.a. Earth Quakes, Wars, etc.) But, that was bound to come around sometime. I just don't know what to think anymore.
To wrap it up, I don't think you are ANY of those things on that list, because I myself have problems with these kinds of things. I know how you feel...
Bands: Wow, that's just too broad of question to answer...
*claps* o.o
i myself think that we came to be in some way and should prolly just drop religion o.O its caused more problems than its fixed (look in the text books folks.) Buddhism is the only one that actually makes sense to me, non violence, happiness and love, and trying to be a better person so your mistakes wont bite you in the ass.
as for anyone who wants to shove religion down my throat...well fuck you if you have to be a evangelical and try to convert people.
Thanks for writing this, (my minds kinda wanderin so i didnt stay on topic...+ its midnight)
