If religon wants its ideas accepted as science, it must be science by very definition.

Technically, as science harbors theories more than scientific laws, religion really could be accepted as a sub-science. (I bet the word pseudo-science comes to your mind - um, no. Different.)
The only thing is that both current scientific beliefs and religious beliefs conflict in a most illogical way (though I can find so many ties and probably no holes between the two), so one would say that science can't accept religion. Technically, yes it can.
Just two things to remember when trying to settle it mentally:
1) Don't take everything in the Old Testament (especially Genesis) literally.
2) Notice that while religious beliefs do also help explain the yet to be explained, the undiscovered in science has as much probability to do with supernatural as well as natural. All in perspective if one will find God in Nature.
