Yeah, that is a JPEG. If you have Photoshop or another imaging program (a good one), you should be able to increase the quality when saving.
Yeah, I use Paint Shop Pro 8 to change my file types.
 The default JPG settings they have on there distorted the image, but once you get the settings right, it looks just like PNG... almost

Not sure if you can submit as a gif or not, but maple characters look find in gif format :-D well...if you actually have a decent program (photoshop, paint shop pro?) or if you have a mac (of course you have a good program on a mac :-P)
