Ho-kay, well. First off, I don't really know anything about the hotels and stuff, namely because I've never been to one of them. But bars, I do know.
Basically, all of the good bars are lined up along st-laurent, st-denis and crescent street, and they're all within walking distance of each other.
Most of the irish pubs are on crescent, McKibbin's is popular (not that great imo, overpriced), kind of the same with McClean's. Across the street from there is where my brother works, (Mad) Hatter's, which is pretty popular amongst college and uni kids.
There's a good bar down st-laurent street (aptly named bar st-laurent 2, why the 2, I will never know), which has free pool and pay-what-you-can shows, which are usually pretty decent (local bands), cheap beer, but a little out of the way (not if you have a car anyway).
There's Foofs (foufounes electriques) on Ste-Catherine, which is pretty much the emo/punk/metal/anyone else who wears black and a lot of chains place, but it's a nice place nonetheless, but it's 5 bucks to get upstairs.
But my favorite bar has to be Clyde's, though it's kind of far from the city. People actually come from off the island to get there though, that's how nice it is there. It's got good music, enough pool tables to be able to get one, good beer, very snazzy waitresses... and I guess the environment is just plain güd. My friend also lives like... 5 minutes from it, so staying till closing time is common for us.
But yeah, those are the places I usually frequent. Oh, and a word of advice: do NOT go to Peel Pub, it's basically gino-asshole central. It's like, you go in and everywhere you hear cries of "eh BRA!", but not in a sarcastic tone.
