When have I ever pushed my religious and/or philosophical beliefs onto you? (or to anyone, for that matter)

Now seriously, I could care less what someone believes. I don't actually hate anyone who's atheist for their beliefs. Believe in nothing all you want, I don't care about that! But I DO hate people who throw their religion on you, and for some reason atheists like to do that MORE than religious people. Now let's get real, I dislike ANYONE who pushes their religion on others, but honestly if you're a religious person with the belief that anyone not in your religion is going to hell, you have a fairly valid excuse - in your mind, you're saving them. If you're an atheist, don't come into every thread that mentions God and say "I don't believe in God" just to start an argument about it. It serves absolutely no purpose other than to start a flame war. We might as well have atheists going door to door. You receive a knock on your door, open it and see two individuals wearing fancy suits and holding science textbooks. I imagine that conversation would go something like Guy: Would you like to hear the good word? You: Oh great, what religion are YOU guys from.. Guy: We're actually atheists, we believe that our lives have been turned around completely by the great man George Carlin, who taught us that religion is bogus. You: ..You're joking, right? Guy: No, it's all true! We're here to encourage you to become atheists with us, and believe in nothing. At this point I slam the door in your face. Seriously, I don't care what you believe, whether you worship God, worship the sun, or worship nothing, do what you will. But don't preach your religion - especially don't preach your lack thereof - to me. Or to Basil. Because telling people to believe nothing makes no sense at all. My question to you is why? Why do you insist on trying to make others believe nothing? I just can't put my head around the reasoning. If you're religious, your purpose in recruiting converts is that you're "saving them". If you're atheist...why? | |

Yeah, exactly!
But if I had posted that I would be considered biased of course. Whoa, when did you meet my boyfriend :-p? But yeah, I agree. I am atheist and it even annoys the hell out of me.

It's really online I think. In real life religious delegation (rather than atheist) is much more common, in here anyway.
There aren't many Christians where I live but I still came across some that tried to make me go to church. I've also came across Jews (Orthodox Jews, the guys with the black suits and funny sidelocks) trying to convert me, although Judaism forbids it. *Knock-knock* <Opens door> "Would you like NOT to talk about Jesus?"

Whether you call religious people thinking they're saving you a valid excuse is up to you, but to me it's nonsense. Fair is fair. It's like rescuing someone who doesn't even want to be rescued in the first place. We know it's there, and we don't want you to come to our house and annoy us with your (for us) stupid yammering about some God and some salvation. Thinking you're saving people is the most selfish reason I can think of. And that's where the difference lies between atheists and religious people, atheists are on the internet while religious people are on the internet also AND on your doorstep trying to convert you.

I can still remember when I was in Hong Kong like 4 years ago, while waiting at a bus stop, two black suited Caucasian males just randomly started a conversation in Cantonese with me, about Jesus of course. I was like, what the heck I don't talk with strangers. F3
I won't say I'm really atheist, cause I've studied in a Catholic school (now that I think of it) since kindergarten. O__o But these people who just randomly come up to you and ask you to convert really irritates me.

On the other side, atheists believe religion manipulates people and causes them to do very stupid things. Like saying to their child that he's getting no presents for christmas 'cause he said he's agnostic, like refusing to believe what someone says 'cause their reverend tells them that person is wrong, like how Israelian jews are now illegally evicting palestinians who've lived on those lands for centuries because they believe it's their holy land, like how Iran is probably building a nuclear arsenal right now as we speak to wipe out all non-muslims in a holy war as we speak and I could go on about this one. Bottom line, a lot more bad stuff is happening right now in name of religion than in the name of atheism, and you could say those people are only a small part of a large group, it doesn't matter, it's still in the name of religion. I hear from people that I lack empathy a lot, I find that normal people, like you, who can't even consider what the other side must be thinking, to be far less empathic than I have ever been.

I can consider, that's why I ask. You bring up a good point, more wars have been started over religion than any other thing. Although it's up for debate whether religion as a whole is a good thing - I'd rather not get into that here.

I hear from people that I lack empathy a lot, I find that normal people, like you, who can't even consider what the other side must be thinking, to be far less empathic than I have ever been." This is the predicament in which people who maintain a belief system find themselves in: Being a part of a system which is looked to as being of more harm than good. Yet frankly, those who put into practice the principle beliefs of most major belief systems will never bring about any of the atrocities that religion has. Therefore, the root cause, although under the scapegoat-name of "religion" is nothing less than the result of greed, hate, and corruption. Issues that only exist in "corrupt" religious systems on the whole. Such aspects of life should not be and are not found in people such as Christians who truly practice what they preach. Thus I would have to say that at its core, for bad things to happen in religion ultimately goes against the nature of the core belief systems within it, whereas if and when the same applies from a non-religious group, it isn't contrary to the said group in a purely materialistic sense, except for perhaps being contrary to "ethics" which may have been formulated by them. Have many wars and problems come into play because of a difference in belief? Certainly, but I'll be of the first to admit that with less people who are moral individuals BECAUSE of their belief system, that things would be far worse if they lacked the said belief system. The existence of religion doesn't cause the corrupt inclinations of human nature, nor greed and hate as these are things that exist independently of it. What I'm suggesting is simply that whether or not religion is here, wrongs will be committed and if not under the name of "religion", some other excuse will be formulated to take its place.

Guilds: JediCouncil Groups: Basilmarkets Visual artists, The Basil Defense Team Whether you know it or not, there's always a belief system central to yourself. By "not believing in any particular religion", you're believing in NOT believing, which is still a belief nonetheless. Every person will have his or her own view of what his/her belief system is like; religious texts are like poetry, you have interpret its meanings for yourself. Thus "Atheism vs Religion" is essentially the same as a "Religion vs Religion" argument, and also equally pointless.
Honestly, I try to keep out of "religion" discussions but I would like to point out that Mindstormer's post above is pretty epic.

What I'm suggesting is simply that whether or not religion is here, wrongs will be committed and if not under the name of "religion", some other excuse will be formulated to take its place." Your second paragraph I agree with, your first one causes me quite some anger. Apparently you know too little of human emotion. In two ways. The first one lies in philosophy of emotion. You claim that religion itself has nothing to do with certain emotions, those often being hate, greed and corruption. I think (and it is) that while there is some truth to that, it will certainly not apply to most causes. Case in point: suicide bombers. What I found out, is that people commit crimes in the pursuit of happiness. No matter what you do, when you break it down, you do it to become happy. Now, I know from experience that actually killing yourself isn't something you will easily do. Plus, it will not benefit you in any way. But what if the following scenario occured; An Iraqi man has lost a part his family to the war, has no job and no way to feed himself and his family. He is told by the resistance groups in the area that if he kills himself and takes a bunch of enemy soldiers with him, he will go to heaven, be treated like a prince and that his surviving family will be fed and sheltered. As you can clearly see, everything that will probably matter to him in such times will te taken care of if he dies and takes some unknown people with him if he goes and it now becomes considerably easier to kill yourself. Why? Because good things will happen to you and your beloved ones if you die. Given such an example, are you still going to tell me that such atrocities are committed purely by negative emotions? Resistance groups, terrorrists for you, believe they and the world will be happier if things go down according to their ideas. The conflict between resistance groups and the army is quite comparable to political debate, though a lot more violent. Every participant believes that his or her way of doing things is the right way. Egoistical, you might say, but you yourself will agree that you have at least once said "if only more people were like me, everything would be better". The main goal for religion is for people to become happy, wouldn't you agree? And while I haven't gone very in depth on the material, crime is used to enrich oneself, and thus to achieve happiness. This means crime is also a path to happiness. Then would you not agree that both are merely different ways of achieving the common goal of happiness?
