UPDATE: So this blog is a bit old now and Nexon has informed us that there will be a "compensation plan" to come. However, it is necessary for them to verify guild information lost. If you have not already done so, please visit the MapleStory Global home page and follow instructions for guild data verification. No action has been taken yet, but guilds will be lost if their members fail to verify with Nexon. UPDATE: Nexon has stopped accepting tickets for the guild hacking situation.Official thread here. We have also recently received a post concerning a "Fire Alarm" hacking spree threatening any player who logs into the game between April 5th, 2008 and April 8th, 2008. The threat seems to have leaked through anonymous source(s), and it racked up nearly 100 pages worth of posts on the popular Basil Market forums. The thread has been closed and its creator's contents have been removed. I'd just like to say a few words about the situation. Many people are quite fazed by the events. There's lots of speculation going around about "rollbacks", compensation, and the (usual) "Nexon won't do anything." Some people are simply frustrated and on the verge of quitting Maplestory entirely. Some people have decided to simply ignore the damage and keep up with their Maplestory businesses. We have experienced what seems to be a coordinated attack on Maplestory Global. They took our guilds away. Some of these prized guilds had a significant meaning to its members and to the societies that surrounded them. For the most part, they're not gone. Many strong guilds have taken precautions against the hacking attempts by recording member names, adding guild members to each others' buddy lists, or retreating to guild forums. If you were truly a part of the guild you belonged to, then the guild also belonged to you. You may not have the physical (although I suppose the correct word is digital) connection with your guild members, but many of you have been able to communicate amongst yourselves without Maplestory's guild chat and BBS functions. Whatever happens, you will always recognize your peers as guildmates. So, I have decided to label these hackers as mere terrorists. They have no power outside their territories. When a patch comes around, they have to work with their own time to come up with a way to elude the defenses placed before them. And to what effect? Fear. Everyone who was fazed has fallen victim to the hackers' game. No more. The thread created on Basilmarket to "warn us" about "Fire Alarm" was created at the right time and clearly at the right place. Thousands of Basilmarket users were afraid enough to prohibit themselves and their friends from logging into Maplestory servers today. I don't think I need to tell anyone (but I will) that being afraid is allowing terrorists to succeed. I firmly believe that we should not let them succeed and should therefore not be afraid. So does this mean it's safe to log into Maplestory? I don't know. I have. Many of my friends have. I don't suspect that I will be hacked over the next few days, but it could happen. It is always your decision in the end. Make the choice that you believe is the right one. P.S. Maybe that was a little more than a few words? :S | |

I actually read all of this yay.
Terrorism is a correct term to analyze it, IMO. It feels like New York City and 9/11. To all guilds that were victims my heart goes out to them. Nexon right now is pulling sources and knowledge on how were the hackers able to guild hijack and how to reverse or at least compensate it. They're basically trying to avoid rollback as much as possible as it effects daily grinders and merchanters. As our mayor during week of 9/11 said "Go to work, do what you have to do, show that we're not afraid but be alert. The city is still here. It will be here tomorrow morning. It's going to be here forever." As for the FireAlarm thing, it was a mere hoax and during a time of damage from all the guild hacking, paranoia gets the best of people.
