Just last week southern Pacific countries recognised Nembara as a new microstate. The UN is about to confirm its existence in the upcoming week.

Nembara, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and Chile, consists of almost 150 small islands and is home to a wide variety of rare reptiles and birds, including the Bronchocela Cristatella lizard and the Chinese White Dolphin.

The interesting thing about Nembara, however, is how it's run. The government gives an impression of a state where everything is free. You're free to buy and sell whatever you like and however you like it. You're not required to pay taxes for the income you get of work (mainly tourism and the IT industry) and the state provides various recreational facilities for you to spend your free time in, free of charge.

However the foreign relations of Nembara aren't looking as good as they could be. The government has decided to use a floating currency, the Nex, which has an extremely small value even compared to China’s currency. Exporting is made easy, but importing goods and services is extremely difficult. To counter this, Nembara has issued special privileges for those who bring foreign currency into the country. Nex is used for all the basic services, but an individual with Euros, USD or Yen may purchase exotic luxuries yet to be seen in the rest of the world.

Luxury items include privileges for higher allowances, shorter working hours, less compulsory education time and not being forced into the armed forces of Nembara. Everyday items include house assistants, endangered species as pets and a wider variety of government selected clothes and accessories not to be used by the "regular" public. The owners of foreign currency are the only ones who can indulge in the luxury of various forms of gambling.

The government is very strict on issues concerning the trading of currencies for private matters. The police force is short on manpower, but when they catch abusers of the system they make such a big noise about it to the media that the public will eventually believe they're being watched continuously.

A resident of Nembara can in no way affect what decisions the government makes. Even contacting the government is said to be extremely difficult and a letter sent may take up to 3 months to be answered. In most cases it is ignored by the officials or replied to with an automatically generated letter stating that nothing can or will be done.

The government wants the people to believe they are doing their best for the public, but already a few individuals have blogged about their conspiracies on various internet sites. I cannot reveal the source of this information due to the risked security issues of an acquaintance of mine. The world will continue watching how the situation develops in Nembara. We can only hope that the Soviet Union will not be reborn in the shade of pacific palm trees and what seems like an eternal paradise for anyone who has only scratched the surface.
