Why is it that every player that i talk to (that isnt a Cleric, Priest, or Bishop)

they're probably talking damage-wise and usefullness in a party (as in party skills). other than that, i don't see anything wrong with mages. in fact, mages can be very useful in parties. i really think it's just the low damage compared to other classes.
