oh noe, sins got much better range. mages can only hit around the map view's range, plus only around 10 degrees off from horizontal, while sins (with maxed keen eyes) can hit around five more inches radius around from the character, almost vertically sometimes..

Mages are hardest to fund (not enough good items you can get) and so they are one of the weakest classes during 2nd job.. (besides pages)
especially if you're a wizard, you will find it hard to get into pq (clerics are prefered) and to train (because of lack of funding)

At around 49-50, I was dealing up to 1200-1300 on Zombies (not much funding, just my nocturnal and an Ic 2) with Heal. I haven't tested my damage as of late (65), but now that I have better funding, it won't be too shabby. And I was only comparing first job, not second, third, or fourth. In first job, mages do have staggering power (until a bit after 30, where every other class begins to catch up Also, I've played both a sin and a mage, and I haven't noticed much of a difference in their range. Seeing how Mages are constantly teleporting, it wouldn't make much of a difference.
