Real-Life Video Game Horror Stories
WORLD OF WARCRAFT: EATER OF SOULS!
Starring: A cast of thousands.
The Plot: Tens of thousands of innocent people—people just like you and me; everyday, plain folk—suddenly find themselves infected with a strange virus via a PC game called World of Warcraft.
The virus seems harmless enough. WoW seems like a nice distraction from the daily grind. It's a little refuge from all the mortage payments and hassles of life.
And then something truly evil begins to happen...
"I lost my place in med school. I lost friends. I lost girlfriends," one of the infected writes.
"I played 187 days of my life," another says. "Those are days of my life I will never get back. I just think about some person dying of cancer, and how much they would give to have even a fraction of that time. 4,488 hours of living I wasted. Six straight months of my life, gone."
"Why should I quit WoW?" another says. "Because I'm sitting here right now, and I'm supposed to be working, and all I can think about is WoW. Because I have spent the majority of my first year of marriage with my WoW friends instead of my new husband. Because I have shed actual tears over things that have happened in-game. Because everything that was important to me, all my life goals, have faded. All of my drive and desire have been focused on in-game goals. Why should I quit WoW? Because I no longer know how to be the real me."
Creepy! And...well, just plain frigging sad.
