Well, 3D programs like Vue (which I use), or Cinema 4D, 3D Studio Max, or Maya, are all object based, you put everything together in a wireframe type of mode, and then render it. That type of thing doesn't need more than a mouse. Plus it's fun to do too. (In Vue at least) It's a lot easier to master the basics, but has advanced things to learn as well, whereas other programs have a steeper learning curve.
I suppose your main focus would be more Photoshop type things though. Deviantart has a lot of rendered pictures if you type in the names of the above-mentioned programs if you're interested to see any.

Yeah, I want to get a wacom tablet sometime, I have 0 drawing skills but It should be slightly more accurate than a mouse and I can learn. Although many people get by just fine with a mouse too.
