I'm not that good myself but here's the basics:

Choose a base color, then lay that color to all the parts you want to fill in with that particular color. Next, think of the light source and consider the folds in the clothes that character is wearing, then color those areas a darker color than your base color. and the same goes for lighting up areas affected by the light.

Try drawing and shading in pencil before you go into coloring in photoshop to get a feel for how shading/lightning works. Take it step by step, figure out the dynamics of shading first, then color theory next.

I had to learn everything for myself

But, my coloring started way back in an Oekaki board. When I just started, I didn't do anything fancy and I drew rather easy things, which was very simple abstract scenery. That was basically the only thing I was good at and I realized that not everything could be colored the way I was doing it.

So basically what I do, is that every picture I come by that I like, I take a really good look at it and take mental notes of shading and choice of colors and see what tools the artist used and how they used it.
